UNCONVENTIONAL WISDOM COLLECTION: Queer Brilliance Edition
06: God Bless Gay: Queer Eye Season 2, Episode 1

Get your tissues for this one! When the Fab 5 visit Mama Tammye in Gay, Georgia, the love is palpable. There are many tender moments in this episode and each member of the Fab 5 brings their unique brilliance.

When Tammye’s son Myles came out as gay, she struggled to know how to hold that as a Christian woman and usher in her Pentecostal church, a church her ancestors founded.

Here are some quotes from Them Magazine’s interview with Tammye:

I was raised in a Pentecostal church with a lot of strict rules and loving people.

When Myles came out to me, I felt, “maybe I can pray it away.” Then I was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, and life took on a whole new meaning. Within that cancer walk, things became clear to me. That’s the time I talked about in the show. Jesus spoke to me and said, “You say you have the same heart and mind that I do, so why can’t you see your son the way I do? Why can’t you love him the way I do?”

I never told Myles anything like “get out of my house,” but I thought I was building him up with love when I was really doing the opposite.

Queer Eye is on Netflix. God Bless Gay is the first episode of season two.

This post is part of a collection of artistic expressions highlighting wisdom from queer voices that have called me to deeper soul attention. What does this stir in you?

I’d written about my experience as a parent whose child came out as gay. You can read that here.
