Window of Tolerance
Dr. Dan Siegel created the concept called the Window of Tolerance. This is the zone where we are connected to ourselves and operate within our agency. Our capacity is influenced by lots of things (e.g. have we eaten, slept, moved our body, or had other stressful experiences before the current one?) I’m attaching a couple of infographics that illustrate the concept.
This concept helps us to name and articulate our experience, either in the present or as we reflect on a past situation. We can strengthen our capacity to witness what’s happening in us and stay present and connected to choice in the midst of stressful circumstances.
See the post Trauma and The Nervous System, A Polyvagal Perspective to learn more about this concept.
Why discuss neuroscience and trauma in the context of spiritual direction?
Disconnection from our inner wisdom disrupts all of our connections — to Self, Spirit, and others. A trauma-informed spiritual director can help us witness the ruptures and residues that arise in us and hold compassionate space.
Most importantly, trauma-informed spiritual directors have done (and continue to do) our own work. We attend to the ruptures and residues of pain in us so we can be present and hold space in a way that prioritizes safety.
Would you like some company or gentle guidance as you listen for wisdom and explore new ways of engaging with your soul? Kirsten offers spacious accompaniment and trauma-informed spiritual direction. I’d love to hear what’s stirring in you and meet with you for a free exploration session.
