To Christian parents receiving news that your child is gay

One day your child may summon the courage to tell you their most tender truth. Are you prepared to receive them? I recommend all Christian parents watch this poetic short film by B.T. Harman which was adapted from his own coming-out story.

If you were raised in the church, it’s not uncommon to struggle when you receive the news that your child is gay. It can feel vulnerable and lonely, especially if your church family is not a safe place to talk freely about your journey.

If your gay child was also raised in the church, it’s quite likely they are carrying hurt and pain. My deep hope is that you will find a place to be held in love as you explore your experience so you can steady them in their vulnerability.

As the parent of two gay kids, I’ve had the privilege of being invited into this journey of deep internal wrestling. You can read about what getting that news was like for me here.

If you are feeling disoriented after receiving this news, or if you are preparing yourself for the future, spiritual direction can be a supportive resource—a place to be held in non-judgment as you honestly name emotions, fears, and doubts in the pursuit of love. If this is where you find yourself, I’d love to meet you to talk more about working together.

May we imagine a world together where we say YES to the fullness of our children and celebrate moments where they invite us into their stories.
